Arm holes too small

I ordered a medium which is my typical size and based on the guidance appeared to be the recommended size. Unfortunately when I tried the top on the sleeves fit so tight it made my arm pits hurt after only wearing the top for five minutes.

How do I wash it?

Turn it inside out and machine wash at a low temperature. Please skip the tumble dryer, the iron, fabric softener and bleach, so the fabric keeps its stretch and colour.
